Why the Boston Celtics chose Kyocera for their Managed Print Services

In sports, success is measured by consistency and performance. The standards are high, and the stakes are higher. Every organization is competing to be the world champion. To get to the top, you need a world-class team and world-class partners. And for the Celtics, Kyocera is exactly that.

The Celtics were looking for a document management solutions provider that could meet their needs. And, Jay Wessland, Chief Technology Officer, had seen it all. “This is my 26th season with the team. I started as a consultant. In the years before Kyocera, I saw every kind of copier and printer company you can imagine.”

They were searching for technology that was easy-to-use, reliable, and freed-up their team to do other tasks. With a range of facilities and offices in Boston, they needed to ensure weekly on-site visits, toner and paper management, driver updates, and maintenance were kept to a minimum.

So, the Celtics knew exactly what they wanted when they began looking for a technology partner. When Kyocera entered the conversation, the promise made to Jay was clear: “Once you try our technology, you won’t need another copier or printer brand again.” More than two decades later, that promise still holds true.

At Kyocera, we are more than a manufacturer. We are partners. Through Kyocera Fleet Services (KFS), we proactively monitor and manage the Celtics’ printer fleet, which was exactly what Wessland wanted, “We all wear a lot of hats and do too many things. What we don't want to do is manage things that are outside our day-to-day. I don't want to manage a copier fleet.”

KFS allows our document management solution experts to handle updates, maintenance, and performance issues remotely, often without the Celtics even knowing an intervention has taken place. It also enhances security as we’re able to identify and eliminate potential risks.

Thanks to Kyocera Fleet Services, one of the biggest operational improvements came about. By analyzing workloads, Kyocera helped consolidate multiple device types into a standardized fleet. Today, the Celtics primarily use TASKalfa 4001ci devices across their offices and facilities. Every machine delivers consistent color and black-and-white output, uses the same toner and drivers, and is easy for any employee to operate. It’s simple: fewer headaches, faster onboarding, and dramatically reduced downtime.

That reliability becomes even more critical during the post-season. As the Celtics advance, hype increases, with media from hundreds of media members in attendance.

And, when the pressure is high, Kyocera steps up.

As operations expand, additional devices are deployed. Kyocera also ensures technicians are on site, ready to respond instantly if needed, ensuring nothing slows the flow of information, which is something Wessland values: “During high demand times, Kyocera’s ability to provide high-touch, white glove service at important events sets them apart and keeps our internal resources focused on their important tasks while Kyocera ensures their equipment runs smoothly at all times.”

In his 26 years at the Celtics, Wessland has seen his fair share of heart-stopping moments on the court. But, off the court, thanks to Kyocera, he has a partner he can trust. “The world runs on relationships. The faces may change, but the service stays the same.”

Today, the greatest compliment he gives Kyocera is that the partnership is “invisible,” no complaints, no downtime, no distractions, just secure, reliable document management that allows the Celtics to focus on what truly matters — winning.
